The Different Forms of Magnesium & Reading Labels

The different types of magnesium in health

When shopping for magnesium supplements, it’s easy to be misled by numbers on the label. Many manufacturers advertise the total weight of the compound as “magnesium”, even though only a fraction of that weight is actual elemental magnesium – the part your body can absorb and use. Understanding this distinction is key to choosing an effective supplement.

For example, a 500 mg capsule of magnesium glycinate might sound like a high dose, but only a small portion of that weight is usable magnesium. The rest is the glycine it’s bound to. Magnesium must always be attached to another molecule, known as a chelate, to survive stomach acid and reach the bloodstream intact.

At ELIVIDE, we list the net elemental magnesium content on all of our magnesium supplements. That means you know exactly how much real magnesium you’re getting in every capsule. Let’s break down the most common forms and what makes each one unique.

Different Magnesium Forms

Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium oxide is one of the most widely available and inexpensive forms. It contains a high percentage of magnesium by weight but is poorly absorbed because it’s an inorganic compound. This means much of it passes through the digestive tract unused. Magnesium oxide and carbonate are both considered low-bioavailability options, often leading to digestive discomfort.

Magnesium Citrate

Magnesium citrate is bound to citric acid, making it more soluble and better absorbed than oxide. However, this form has a strong laxative effect for many people. While commonly used for constipation, it may not be ideal for daily supplementation. Excess citric acid may also interfere with copper metabolism, so we generally recommend gentler alternatives for long-term use.

Magnesium Chloride

Magnesium chloride is often used in liquid drops or transdermal sprays. It’s gentle, well absorbed and a good introduction for those sensitive to higher-dose capsules. This form also dissolves easily in water, making it suitable for topical applications and baths. For a relaxing option, consider magnesium chloride flakes as part of a calming evening routine.

Magnesium Glycinate (Bisglycinate)

Magnesium glycinate – also known as bisglycinate – is one of the most bioavailable and well-tolerated forms. It’s made by binding magnesium to the amino acid glycine, which itself has calming effects on the nervous system. This combination makes magnesium glycinate an excellent choice for sleep, relaxation and nervous-system support.

Our Magnesium Bisglycinate Food provides 130 mg of elemental magnesium per two-capsule serving, blended with organic evaporated coconut water for natural electrolyte balance. It’s gentle on digestion, vegan, and completely additive free.

Magnesium Malate

Magnesium malate combines magnesium with malic acid – a compound naturally found in fruit that supports the Krebs cycle, the body’s energy production pathway. This form is ideal for individuals who experience fatigue or low energy, as it supports ATP synthesis and muscle recovery. Many users find it energising during the day yet still supportive of restful sleep.

Explore our Magnesium Malate Food, which provides 160 mg of elemental magnesium per two-capsule serving. It’s crafted for bioavailability and free from synthetic additives or stearates.

Magnesium Orotate

Magnesium orotate pairs magnesium with orotic acid, a compound involved in DNA and RNA synthesis. This form is often used by athletes or individuals looking to enhance recovery and endurance because it supports cellular energy metabolism. While effective, it’s generally more expensive and less common than other chelates.

Magnesium Threonate

Magnesium threonate is made by binding magnesium to L-threonate, a metabolite of vitamin C. It’s promoted for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, supporting cognitive function and neuroprotection. While it may aid memory and focus, it’s worth noting that all chelated forms of magnesium eventually reach the brain. Threonate is also less magnesium dense, meaning it provides smaller elemental doses per gram.

Magnesium Sulphate

Better known as Epsom salt, magnesium sulphate combines magnesium with sulphur and oxygen. It’s not typically used in oral supplements but is widely used in baths and topical applications for its muscle-relaxing effects. Magnesium sulphate is absorbed transdermally and can help with cramps and stress relief.

Magnesium Taurate

Magnesium taurate binds magnesium to the amino acid taurine, known for its role in cardiovascular and nervous-system function. This form is particularly beneficial for heart health and exercise recovery. It’s the foundation of our upcoming Magnesium Taurate Food, designed to support performance, calm and electrolyte balance naturally.

Which Magnesium Form Should You Choose?

The best magnesium form depends on your individual goals and how your body responds. For example:

If you’re just beginning, you might start with transdermal magnesium via magnesium chloride baths or sprays. This is a gentle, well-tolerated way to increase magnesium intake without digestive strain.

Balancing Electrolytes

Magnesium is one of the four major electrolytes alongside potassium, sodium and calcium. Increasing magnesium without considering the others can affect overall mineral balance. To maintain homeostasis, make sure your diet also includes adequate sources of potassium (fruits and vegetables) and sodium (natural salts). Our formulations, blended with organic coconut water powder, naturally complement this balance.

Making Sense of Supplement Labels

When reading magnesium labels, always look for the phrase “elemental magnesium”. This refers to the actual amount of magnesium your body can use, not the total compound weight. For example, a supplement might say “Magnesium Glycinate 500 mg” on the front, but the fine print may reveal it only provides 100–130 mg of elemental magnesium.

By focusing on elemental content and choosing bioavailable chelates such as bisglycinate or malate, you’ll get far better absorption and results. At ELIVIDE, we design each formula with zero additives, fully reacted chelates, and organic co-factors for clean, effective supplementation.
