Why I Started ELIVIDE – Redefining Purity in Supplements

When I first set out to create ELIVIDE, my goal was simple: to design supplements that truly respect human biology and the environment. After years of studying nutrition and working with clients, I became increasingly frustrated by how disconnected the supplement industry had become from nature. What was being sold as “health” often contained the very things that disrupt it.

The Problem I Saw

After looking closely at what was available on the market, I noticed that most supplements were filled with synthetic additives and manufacturing agents that served production efficiency, not the person taking them. You’ll often see ingredients like magnesium stearate, stearic acid, titanium dioxide or palmitate — substances used to keep machines running smoothly, not to nourish your body. In some cases, these compounds can make up more of a capsule than the active nutrient itself.

For me, that made no sense. If we’re taking supplements to support wellbeing, they should be as pure and biologically compatible as possible — not diluted by fillers and chemical agents. I wanted to prove it was possible to make supplements without compromise.

Magnesium Malate: Restoring Energy and Balance Naturally

As a nutritionist, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients struggling with low energy, muscle tension, and restless sleep, and magnesium deficiency is one of the most consistent underlying patterns I see. But not all magnesium supplements are created equal. The form you choose can determine whether your body actually absorbs and uses it. So how can we improve bioavailability? When I work with clients, I'm always thinking about ways to optimise their absorption of food, before I even think about changing the diet. We can be eating the healthiest food in the world but we might not be absorbing it. Here's my top tips for making sure you get the most out of your food.Chewing You have probably heard this many times before but chewing is essential for digesting food properly. Did you know that carbohydrate digestion starts in the mouth? The more we chew, the more we signal our stomach to produce acid and our pancreas to start making digestive enzymes. Both of which are essential for increasing how much we absorb. Aim for 20 chews per mouthful. Liquid intakeBe mindful of drinking too many fluids near to eating, ideally 20 minutes before and after food refrain from drinking too many fluids. A few sips is absolutely fine but just to be aware that drinking to many fluids can dilute our stomach acid and digestive enzymes. Drinking a lot of fluids during a meal can also lead to feeling uncomfortably full or bloated, which may hinder digestion by causing an overly stretched stomach.TimingThere's nothing more your body loves than routine as its always looking to predict your next move so it can prepare better, at least physiologically speaking. If you can eat at the same time each day, you will find more consistent hunger patterns and likely better digestion as a result. Keeping a routine isn't easy in this day and age but aim for a 30 minute window at each eating interval.BreathingAre you breathing through your mouth the majority of the time? Breathing through your mouth increases activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), sometimes referred to as our fight and flight system. Think of it this way, the only time you would breath through your mouth is when you are running at the peak of your breath, at least thats when it should happen. It's a bit like simulating running for your life. Our SNS is not interested in digesting food and therefore shuts down digestive processes. Try to get into the habit of breathing deeply through your nose during the day and also whilst you eat. This will help make your body feel safe enough to digest properly.There's plenty more one can think about when considering bioavailability but these are great tips to consider that don't even involve changing your food. Mitochondria are membranous, slightly elongated structures contained within the cytoplasm of almost all eukaryotic cells. Using aerobic respiration, they take oxygen and the compounds in our food to make energy (in the form adenosine triphosphate, known as 'ATP'). Each cell contains the appropriate amount of mitochondria relative to its energy use. That means organs such as the heart contain a lot of mitchondria, infact each cell of your heart contains around 5000 mitochondria. When we lose mitochondria or they begin to malfunction, it can increase our risk of 'dis-ease'. It is thought that mitochondria were originally independent bacterial entities which at some point over a billion years ago (through much trial and error) entered other bacterial cells and decided to partner up. This moment was monumentous, you could argue this was the beginning of complex life as we know it. Two important cycles that occur within the mitochondria for energy production are the the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) and the electron transport chain (ECT). Think of these like factory lines, they need to be flowing freely in order for energy to be generated efficiently. During normal oxidative phosphrlation (whereby ATP is formed by electron transfer) about 2 percent of the oxygen consumed is converted to superoxide (a type of free radical). This is where nutrition comes, anti-oxidants from our diet help to mop up the free radicals formed by energy production. Unfortunately, making energy comes with exhaust.  So what do mitochondria need to function properly? Magnesium: In order for ATP be 'activated', it needs to form a complex with magnesium.  B Vitamins: These are like the workers on the factory line, helping to pass energy from one cycle to another. Each B vitamin has a specific role, for example riboflavin (B2) plays a key role in shuttling electrons from the TCA and cobalamin (B12) is needed to generate s-adenosyl methionine (SAMe) which is part of the protein sub unit that makes up the ECT. COQ10: You can think of COQ10 as the oil in the factory, it helps to keep things running smoothly. It can regenerate free radicals and soothe them back into the ECT. PQQ: Otherwise known as pyrroloquinoline quinone, helps control redox processes in the mitochondrial, essentially balancing oxidative stress as well as stimulating energy production. B3: We need B3 or niacinamide to manufacture NADH (energy carrier) and to supply protons for oxidative phosphorylation. Copper: Copper is a cofactor in the ECT so that ATP can be released, it also plays a key role in mitochondrial signaling and mitophagy. Given mitochondria's role in the body, mitocondrial may be the key to unlocking the process of aging itself. According to this theory, with age, mitochondria accumulate ROS-induced damage and become dysfunctional. With time, the function of cells declines causing aging and subsequent death. Many things can induce oxidative stress in humans, including not having the necessary cofactors for making energy. Remember, making energy makes exhuast. What Is Iodine? The Halogen Inside Each Of Your Cells

In conjuction with the release of our latest supplement, we wanted to talk a little bit more about Iodine. Our new organic seaweed blend contains 346ug of wholefood iodine which equates to 230% of the RNI (reference nutrient intake), but why do we need it? and what really is iodine? Bernard courtois was the man who first discovered iodine which is a halogen if you're looking at the periodic table. He was originally making gunpowder from potassium and sodium but accidentally added too much sulphuric acid to seaweed ash and observed a distinct purple colour. This was the birth of iodine ('iodes' in greek means violet-coloured).  There are naturally occurring non-radioactive and radioactive iodine forms. Radioactive iodine has uses in medicine to diagnose and treat certain conditions whereas natural forms come in many sources like seaweed.  In human health iodine is often misunderstood. It is a micronutrient that is found in each of your cells but is a relatively rare earth element ranking 62. It is typically concentrated in sea organisms such as seaweed which means the further inland you go, the further you get away from iodine and the more prevalent iodine deficiency becomes. This is highlighted by what was known as 'the goilter belt' (areas within Great Lakes, Appalachian, and Northwestern U.S. regions etc) which had high prevalences of iodine deficiency. Goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland; when a gland doesn’t get what it needs, it typically increases its surface area in an attempt to find more of its missing micronutrient, in this case iodine. In order to combat the epidemic of goiter happening worldwide governments began adding iodine to salt products (iodized salt) and although this did have an impact on the prevalence of goiter, it did not address the wider issues. Between 1970s - 2000 studies by NHANES still showed a 50% drop in iodine levels across the US (similar figures in many parts of europe) with the percentage of pregnant women with low iodine concentrations increasing 690% over this time period. The question is, why was this? This was likely due to a couple of different reasons including reduced dietary intake and exposure to other halides such as bromide and flouride. Specific functions of iodine Iodine is an essential ingredient for thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which are key hormones in the regulation of your metabolic rate. Every single cell in your body depends on adequate levels of thyroid hormone.  Deficiencies or overdoses of iodine are risk factors in hypothyroidism and autoimmune diseases like Graves and Hashimotos. Iodine is not found in large quantities in the body although there’s around 15-20mg in the thyroid of an average adult. The thyroid gland concentrates it there using a system known as the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) of which the mammary glands have the same mechanism for concentrating iodine. But it's not just the thyroid gland, iodine might just be one of, if not the most important micronutrient for breast health. There is a wealth of research showing the connection between iodine deficiency and breast cancer. As mentioned, the breasts also have a sodium/iodide transport system, concentrating iodine there. The concentration of iodine in mammary glands and its secretion here highlights the importance of iodine. Low levels conclusively cause changes to the structure and function of the breasts. It’s worth noting that in animal studies, iodide is ineffective at reversing pre-cancerous lesions of breast tissue whereas iodine is much more effective.  Iodine also helps prevent lipoperoxidation (the oxidation of lipids) which has been found to be elevated in breast tumours and can help balance estrogen by maintaining the estrogen/estriol ratio. When there is an imbalance in estrogen ratios (estrone, estriol and estrogen), women can suffer from things like fibrocystic breasts, a condition where breasts have cysts which are usually painful to touch. In cancer, iodine has the ability to induce apoptosis, the process of timed cell death which is essential for the regulation of cancer in the body. It does this through a few mechanisms like the iodination of lipids. It really does pack a punch in the anti-oxidant department.  Why we might need more iodine now One of the issues around halogens is that they like to compete in the body. Other halides, particularly bromide and fluoride can bind to iodine receptors in the body, blocking absorption. Bromide has no place in the body. It is a toxic compound which is used as a flame retardant in many furnishings and in baked goods as a dough conditioner. Fluoride is also added to many water supplies to help strengthen teeth but it comes at a cost. Furthermore, perchlorate, another halogen which contains one atom of chlorine and four atoms of oxygen, further displaces iodine. Perchlorate has contaminated many water supplies due to poor disposal. It is used in a variety of products like air bags, leather tanning, fireworks and in rocket fuel. The introduction of these compounds, on top of low dietary intake is a recipe for deficiencies. This is one of the reasons why some scientists believe the RNI is inadequate.
